One.com Review: Danish Hosting of Mediocre Quality

One.com is a Danish hosting provider that caters to complete beginners. The service is easy to use, but isn't particularly impressive in any aspect.

One.com is one of Europe's largest hosting providers. In recent years, they have acquired numerous hosting brands under the umbrella name group.ONE. The group has a total of 14 million customers and more than 500 employees.

One.com focuses on beginners. They only offer simple shared hosting plans (6 options), without providing cloud hosting, VPS, or dedicated servers.

Their service excels in mediocrity. Their hosting offers average speed, decent uptime, and customer support that won't exactly thrill you, but won't drive you crazy either. Their prices aren't high, but considering what you get, they're not particularly attractive either.

So while One.com isn't bad hosting, there's also no compelling reason to strongly recommend them. These days, it's a service that's primarily chosen because it's a well-known brand name.

In this One.com review, I'll explore all these aspects in more detail.

Speed

One.com has been around since 2002, has millions of customers, and primarily focuses on beginners. These three ingredients combined don't make for a recipe that produces blazing fast performance.

This is what their hosting infrastructure looks like:

• Hardware is provided by HP, IBM and Dell
• Storage is provided by Hitachi
• They use data centers from Interxion
• Firewalls and routers are from Juniper
• Switches are manufactured by Cisco

This is a very solid list of partners, but your site on One.com still won't be particularly fast. Especially not with the cheaper plans.

This is partly related to the resources allocated to you:

512 MB of RAM is very limited for shared hosting – even for a budget plan.

Uptime

Uptime refers to how long your site is operational. This percentage should be as close to 100% as possible.

One.com has good uptime. I've found very few user complaints regarding uptime. Additionally, the provider offers a status page where you can view outages and other issues with their servers.

For a provider of their size, the reported incidents are extremely minimal.

Customer Service

One.com offers 24/7 customer service through live chat, ticket support, and a knowledge base.

The knowledge base isn't very extensive, but the articles are well-structured and reasonably up-to-date. Most issues you might encounter should be solvable through this knowledge base.

When you want to speak with a real person via live chat, you'll first need to work through a few questions from a bot. This is rather annoying, but it typically takes between two and 10 minutes before you're connected with an actual human being. This is acceptable.

The knowledge level of most support staff is comparable to that of most large hosting providers. They have limited technical expertise but are adequate for resolving most simple problems.

One.com is certainly not known for having spectacular customer service.

Other important considerations

Dashboard

One.com's dashboard is intuitively designed and easy to use. It's ideal for beginners. However, it lacks some of the more advanced features that experienced users would appreciate.

Security

Every One.com plan includes a free SSL certificate. Additionally, they offer SiteLock with their more expensive plans, which can help protect against malware.

Their server infrastructure is of such high quality that you don't need to worry about the security of your website.

Hosting features and add-ons

Every hosting plan from One.com includes as standard:

• Daily backups
• At least 50GB storage (this is very generous, and realistically speaking, you'll never fill it up)
• Email hosting

With their more expensive plans, you also get a staging environment where you can safely test new designs, themes, and plugins for your website.

It's somewhat strange that their cheapest plan doesn't offer 1-click WordPress functionality, but rather treats it as a “premium” feature. That feels a bit stingy.

One.com hosting plans and pricing

One.com only offers shared hosting. Shared hosting means that your site is placed on a server with other websites. It's by far the most popular form of hosting and is also the most logical hosting choice for the vast majority of all websites.

One.com divides their plans into Web Hosting and WordPress hosting, but these two are exactly the same with them.

On their two cheapest plans, you can only install a single site. Starting with their Enthusiast plan, they become a bit more generous: on this plan, you can install up to 5 sites.

The entry-level prices for their cheapest plans start at €1.99 per month, but the prices jump up significantly after that. And be careful—you'll be billed annually.

One.com's prices aren't particularly high, but they're not competitively priced for what you get. There are hosting providers that offer much better value for money, which I'll discuss below.

One.com Alternatives

For European users, Cloud86 is a significantly better hosting provider. They're equally suitable for beginners but also offer more advanced hosting plans for experienced users. They provide phone support with no wait times. Cloud86 uses LiteSpeed servers, which means your site loads incredibly fast. And to top it all off, their pricing is slightly more competitive than One.com.

There is no compelling reason to choose One.com. The service isn't terrible, but it doesn't excel in any area either and doesn't offer anything that other providers don't do significantly better.
